History of New Dawn in Walsingham, England

The charismatic conference New Dawn is organized by the community Prince of Peace. It grew out from a very modest beginnings and its founder, Myles Dempsey, desired to renew England as Our Lady´s dowry.

In 1985 Myles Dempsey was present at a charismatic conference in Ars, France. He was moved by a fervent faith of the large gathering and asked in a prayer if it would be in God´s will to organize such conference in England. He got back three words – „Walsingham“ and „New Dawn“.

At that time he did not know much about Walsingham nevertheless the words were so clear and strong that it made him to start a process to see whether it would be feasible. In Catholic Church in England there was no precedent for such event as majority of the pilgrimages came only for a day.

Walsingham is an ancient place of pilgrimages which in the pre-reformation times belonged together with Rome, Jerusalem and Santiago de Compostela to the most important sanctuaries in the world. Besides large crowds coming every year, kings starting with Henry III. till Henry VIII. were visiting the shrine regularly. After the division of Henry VIII with Catholic Church the sanctuary was torn down and the statue of Our Lady of Walsingham was publicly burnt in London.

"I believe that one of the reasons the Lord founded our community in 1985 (Prince of Peace Community) was to establish the conference, otherwise we couldn't have done it" says Myles.

The little group had no experience of organising such an event and no financial assets, but they did have great faith, and with only £20 in a jam jar, they began the a mammoth task, picking up expertise on the way.

The first conference took place in 1987 with 800 people present. Since then the conference is organized annually with about 3000 people participating and not only from England, Scottland and Ireland but also from other European countries and continents - such as Africa, Asia and South America.

The fruit of the conference is extraordinary – it became place of conversions, deep inner healings and blessings for whole families. It was here where the inspiration to establish Mother´s Prayers originated leading later to Father´s Prayers.

Myles described the essence of the New Dawn conference with following words: „I want the Church be visible in all its beatuy. Shining in its glory and glorified in all its aspects - charismatic, liturgic, Marian, Eucharistic, sacramental and mystical – and may the whole families be present“.
